Paralela
This page contains the documentation for the Paralela corpus search engine. The tool has been designed to search an open-ended, opportunistic parallel corpus of Polish-English and English-Polish translations.
The publicly available Paralela index currently contains over 262 000 000 words in 10 877 301 parallel segments from Polish-English and English-Polish text translations. More than 8 million words in the corpus were manually aligned and annotated for equivalence type.

SlopeQ syntax
Paralela uses the SlopeQ 2 query syntax. The examples below are customized to show how the SlopeQ syntax can be used for searching the parallel corpus. For practical reasons the number of examples illustrating each query in this presentation is very limited. However, a link to a page with all the results is given for each query.
Surface query
This is the simplest type of queries. You input words in plain written form in the query box. The results are a list of segments with the form in the language selected as the source language and the corresponding target segments. Compare the query and a selection of results:

Base form query
These queries make use of the lexical annotation of the data in the Paralela corpus. The results are the occurrences of different forms of the given word. The query is written in triangular brackets as an equation “lemma=”. After the equation mark you put the base form of the word.
The base form of the word is: the infinitive for verbs, nominative singular for nouns (except for pluralia tantum), nominative singular masculine for adjectives.

This kind of query is obviously very useful in languages like Polish where nouns and verbs have numerous grammatical forms. It is a simple way to research the use of the word in all its forms.

Metadata queries
By using a conjunction of a span query and a logical metadata query the results can be filtered not to include a particular source or to include only cerain types of translation relationship between segments. Metadata queries use the Apache Solr DisMax syntax and they are appended as a logical conjunction to the obligatory span query.
For example, the following span query limits the results to instances retrieved from literary prose excluding specifically “The Wuthering Heights”. Additionally, the type of translation relationship between segments is limited to cases of simple alignment or parahprase, containing at least 5 words.

Predefined collections
A functionality similar to metadata queries is provided by the features of query facets and predefined collection. These features can be a simpler alternative because they can be accessed through the user interface as shown in the example below:
Predefined collections are a set of metadata queries that can be selected from a drop-down list found under the corpus query text box. In the example above the results are limited to 'practical guides', i.e. sources labelled as “Poradniki i informatory” in the corpus taxonomy.
Query facets
For every query the search engine computes a summary of matches from different metadata categories in the entire corpus. These summaries are called 'facets' and are divided into: source (a large number of individual texts), genre (seven subcategories, e.g. literary prose), medium (five subcategories, e.g. internet, book), type (nine subcategories of translation relationships between segments, e.g. paraphrase).
Facets are visualized as pie charts in the Statistics section of the results screen and are also presented in the form of interactive tables. Users can use those tables to narrow down the results to particular facets.
Equivalence
This is another functionality that can be accessed through a tab in the menu of the results screen.
In the case of a simple query such as zatem we obtain a list of occurrences featuring lexemes that are likely equivalents of the search item, such as “therefore”, “thus” and “so” as in the examples below:
